How it works

Store. Check in. Release.

Your files reach the right people when you can't access them anymore.

The problem

Important files locked away. Passwords, documents, photos, instructions.

What happens to them if you can't access them anymore?

The solution

Trustbourne stores your encrypted files and automatically releases them to people you trust when you become unresponsive.

Four simple steps

  1. Store your files Upload documents, passwords, photos—anything important. Everything is encrypted in your browser before it leaves your device.

  2. Add trusted contacts Choose the people who should receive your files. They verify their identity but don't need to create an account.

  3. Regular check-ins We send periodic messages asking if you're okay. Respond with a tap—that's it.

  4. If you stop responding We verify with your contacts, send you a final warning, then release your vault to them.

The check-in cycle

Most of the time, you'll just respond to occasional check-ins. Here's what happens if you don't:

Stage What happens When
Check-in We ask if you're okay Every 30 days (or custom on Plus)
Reminders Multiple attempts across email, SMS, WhatsApp Days 1-7
Contact verification We reach out to your trusted contacts Days 8-30
Final warning Last chance to respond Day 38
Vault release Your files are released to contacts Day 40+

The process is deliberately slow. We'd rather wait than release prematurely.

Your privacy

In-browser encryption: Your files are encrypted on your device before they reach us, and decrypted in the browser after download. Unencrypted files never touch our servers—not even temporarily.

Two encryption modes:

  • Standard: We hold a per-vault release key (each vault has its own—no master key) to help your contacts access files after release. We could technically decrypt, but don't—and even then, decryption happens in the browser, not on our servers. Simpler for contacts. Available on all plans.
  • Maximum Privacy: True zero-knowledge. No release key on our servers. File names are encrypted too—we can't see them. Contacts need a passphrase you've shared separately. You can leave them a personal message (which might hint at where to find the passphrase), but we cannot decrypt your files or see their names. Available on Plus.

EU data residency:

  • All data stored in the EU
  • No US cloud providers
  • GDPR compliant by design
